The Long Journey of Odysseus

It takes 20 years to travel home from the Trojan War. He has many amazing adventures and learns a lot about himself and the world. He even goes down to the underworld to talk to the dead. The Odyssey is therefore a long and complex journey often a quest for a goal and can be a spiritual or psychological journey as well as a real journey.

Since many people were illiterate the poems were performed to listeners by aideos or rhapsodes.


The theme of the epic is the concept of nostos 'homecoming'  'travel' which plays a more important role than in other works of ancient literature. This emphasis is particularly striking when compared to the Iliad which focuses on the heroic deeds of soldiers and kings during the Trojan War. Homer's Odyssey is an ancient poem believed to have been written in the late 8th century BC. It tells the story of the perilous journey of Odysseus king of Ithaca as he tries to return home after the Trojan War encountering many trials and adventures along the way.
