Antiquities in tomb of Te Kab Chaak
Mayan city
The 1,600-year-old tomb of the first ruler of a Maya city in Belize the rain god on a branch The tomb of the king of Caracol Te K'ab Chaak was an important Maya lowland center from the 6th to 7th centuries A group of raised structures outside the city center served as royal residences and public ceremonies The 2010 discovery of Te K'ab Chaak's tomb revealed artifacts from central Mexico including obsidian blades indicating the influence of Teotihuacan in central Mexico which also influenced the later Aztecs This demonstrates the unique Teotihuacan non-Maya cremation style marking the beginning of interactions between Teotihuacan and the Maya in the region
The city's regional power was at the height of Caracol's rise. The Maya empire had been occupied by Caracol warriors nearly a century earlier In 562 AD Caracol warriors defeated the powerful forces of Tikal in Guatemala The extensive connections between Caracol and Teotihuacan spanned a generation between the three tombs During the event known as La Entrada Teotihuacan is believed to have expanded its influence into the Mayan lowlands in 378 AD. Although the ancient cities are thousands of kilometers apart artifacts from Caracol suggest that the situation was different and that this culture belonged to the Maya and was later conquered by the Aztecs
