The natural origins of Polynesian culture

Ancient Polynesian culture was a magnificent maritime civilization of Austronesian peoples who traversed the Pacific Ocean in traditional canoes designed for long-distance voyages. Lacking compasses ancient Polynesians navigated by observing the stars wind and waves seabird flight paths and the color of the water. They established civilizations across the islands of the central and southern Pacific spanning millions of square miles using double-hulled or large canoes to transport agricultural crops and livestock.

The region is noted for distinctive artistic styles such as the Marquesan tradition and basket-weave patterns on pottery and the intriguing legacy of the Lapita culture. Characteristic motifs including serrated or "dentate-stamped" designs were impressed into basket-weave patterns and red-clay pottery by these ancient indigenous peoples.
