Flourishing across various valleys this civilization reached its zenith between the 10th and 15th centuries. It succeeded the Chimú Kingdom before eventually being conquered by the Inca Empire. The Chimú people held traditional beliefs centered on the worship of the Moon revered as their most important deity and were renowned for their lustrous blackware pottery exquisite gold and silver metalwork and vibrant feather-adorned textiles.

The term "Sicán" which can be interpreted as "House" or "Temple of the Moon" is deeply rooted in the beliefs of the ancient Peruvian people. According to the legends of the Chimú and the Lambayeque culture which persisted into the era of the ancient Incas there existed a realm associated with a figure named Naymlap. This legacy is reflected in the construction of massive adobe structures which served as repositories for intricate gold artifacts often inlaid with turquoise.

A pre-Columbian artifact resembling a feather or rays of the sun crafted by the Sicán Lambayeque culture featuring turquoise and a gold crown.

In these fertile river valleys which yielded essential crops the inhabitants lived in a warm sunny desert-like climate. Following the Inca conquest the focus shifted toward the worship of the Sun god a transition intended to ensure abundant harvests. The Incas further developed the tradition of crafting gold and metal-alloy gold-copper ornaments used to decorate everyday objects garments and jewelry often featuring designs that resemble feathers.

The power and authority of the Sicán or Lambayeque culture are embodied in artifacts such as masks and crowns. Distinctive features of this culture include large circular ear ornaments inlaid with turquoise as well as conical vessels and polished pottery. The Sicán people also constructed adobe-brick pyramids which served as focal points for the ritual practices that defined their civilization during its flourishing period an era that predated the Inca Empire.
